Manager’s Tour Diary: North American Tour

Tour diary
North American tour
Sept 23, 2008

So new tour, new show.  Or that’s the theory, at least.  After a handful gigs in Eastern Europe to check they could still even do it, the band are out on their first major tour as a four-piece in 7 years.  Elaborate plans have been set to ensure a clear visual distance from the amiina-plus-brass shows seen in the summer.

We are meant to be having new lights and visuals, and indeed, after a fashion, we do. Except, there’s a problem.  After one show, during which my notes on things-needing-attention run to several sides, our lighting guy Freysi succumbs to pneumonia overnight and is rushed to the nearest hospital. Thus, we wake to our second New York show (always a big stress anyway) with no-one who knows their way round the show or even the lighting-cum-visuals board.

Okay.  Let’s not panic. There’s a technician who comes with the hired lighting and visual kit who surely understands how to work this shit. True, he only heard Sigur Ros for the first time last night, but needs must, eh?  Even then the show he did see had so much wrong with it that I wouldn’t want him to take that as any kind of template. Cues were missed, the wrong projection gauzes were used for some songs, visuals were forgotten, colour palettes misplaced, etc. All the type of stuff typical of a first show but, under the circumstances, more than a little troubling.

But what else can we do? So, we sit through the day, me, Mike and Alastair, the Kiwi who’s been inputting Jonsi’s new video content, and try and piece together something that might vaguely stand as some kind of show.  The computer has a memory of what lights/films are used in which song, but not their cues, durations or intensities, or how they combine to make something more than the sum of its parts.  Mike and Alastair work like troupers to get on top of a colossal amount of information, breaking it down into individual song sheets to be referenced live.

Because of this unexpected development, it is necessary to keep the setlist for both NYC shows the same, even though we had intended to make them much more complementary in terms of representing the SR canon.  During the show the three of us sit in a row each in headphones and mic, with me telling Mike what is going to happen next in any given song that he might anticipate the change. In the event, he acquits himself admirably and I have a strangely exalted feeling that we pulled it out of the fire, and did a good show.

Sadly, this evaporates the next night in Boston, when I think adding a whole layer of new refinements to last night’s instructions becomes overwhelming, and the show is pretty much a mess.  Sound guy Jelle, who stands next to us all night and sees what’s going on, suggests I stand back, now Mike for the most part knows his way around the show, and let him get on with it for better or worse. It’s good advice, and the fourth show in Montreal is a definite step in the right direction. Still plenty to fix, but Mike is stepping up to the plate. Well done, Mike, and get well soon, Freysi.

Anyway, if anyone feels the show has sucked for these first few shows, you can see we’ve got a pretty reasonable excuse, right?  The good news is we’ve crossed some sort of hump now, I hope, and are even managing to swap out songs from the setlist to change it up a bit.  ‘Festival’ came in for Montreal, and ‘E-bow’ in Toronto.  I’m particularly excited for this second inclusion, since it harks back to the time when the band were last a quartet, during the ‘( )’ tour (which is often under-represented in SR sets, in my opinion). The gloomy, dark stuff works well as counterpoint to the new sunny stuff from ‘Med Sud…’.  All we’ve got to do now is get it all hanging together and we might even have us a show.

Show concerns aside, the first few dates have been a lot of fun. The band have all now got foldable Brompton bikes (www.brompton.co.uk), which go on the truck with all the equipment. This means they can now rock up in city and be out and about exploring it in a jiffy.  Keep an eye eagle out for a squadron of skinny boys on delicate bikes if they come to your town.

Backstage at the Montreal show, they were practising their wheelie abilities (it’s hard to pull a wheelie on a Brompton) and doing that bouncy thing bmx riders do, and having races round the gritty harbour-side compound. Amazingly no-one got gravel rash, although Jonsi did crack his nuts coming over a cable channel at great speed.  (www.youtube.com/v/6N87SremET8&hl=en&fs=1)

Later on, support band Parachutes decided to stage an impromptu Icelandic wrestling, or Glima competition. It was after the show and strong drink had been taken, but luckily most of the Ros seemed disinclined to take part. Georg even said dismissively that someone would end up getting hurt. Little did he think that 20 minutes later it would be him, when he finally gave in to the primal urge, and got tanked by some Canuck.  He was limping badly afterwards and prophesying the worst, but as far as I know he’s not had to go onstage in a wheelchair as of yet.

In other news!  (Some things I made a note to tell you ‘cos I thought they were funny).  In Boston, the really long, drawn out intro to ‘Vidrar’ is because Jonsi went absolutely blank on the opening verse of the song and had to walk over to Kjartan for him to mouth it a few times til he got with the programme. This has never happened before, and he puts it down to “not being drunk enough”. It’s a slippery slope, Jonsi.

On a similar matter, the band are thinking of instituting a Gig Anonymous session for after shows, so they can confess all their mistakes made during the performance.  This, too, came after the Boston show, when Kjartan realised he was more hung-over than he had credited himself with being and as a result had played more bum notes than usual (usually he doesn’t play any at all, of course!).

Still with Kjartan. We were talking about the tour, and it became apparent that other than New York and LA, he didn’t have a clue where we were going on this trip.  For Kjarri it’s all going to be one glorious magical mystery tour.

Earlier in New York at the first night aftershow, I had met Ryan McGinley, whose photograph we used on the front cover of the new album, for the first time. Since he’s a big time photographer, I expected him to have his snoot in the air and be up himself, when in fact he was completely the opposite and couldn’t have been nicer in any way, shape or form.  You could see why people had no problem in getting butt-naked in front of him – not that I did, I hasten to add…

There was an interesting post on the messageboard after the first NYC show saying that Jonsi was having voice problems in opener Svefn-G-Englar and that he tried four times to reach the final note saying “excuse me” between efforts.  That made me smile, ‘cos that’s just such a sweet misinterpretation. In fact, he always sings that note round a few times, only this time he does make some wordless (Hopelandic) whispering ad-lib semi-off mic between times. That’s just the way he rolls these days, folks.

While we were in New York we did a live session at AOL, which may or may not be live online by the time you read this.  We did it early morning after the first show and they had laid on some toxic-looking donuts. Georg, bless him, went round and took a big bite out of every single pink, brown, white, frosted, sprinkled and crème-filled confection, thereby marking it as his own for later on. It was funnier at the time than it looks written down…

Also funnier as it happened was Jonsi reappearing for the final bow in Montreal wearing a mop-top wig, as owned by backline tech Silli.  It is amazing how hilarious the wearing of wigs can be.

I had this dream the other night where I was getting Brad Pitt to do an online ad for the new album. It went something like this, Brad in den-like environment presumably his home, leans towards camera and adjust it as if to do a video diary. Settles back in comfy chair and starts speaking, “Hi, my name’s Brad Pitt, and when I kick back I like to listen to ‘M-med sud eye ear-rum’” [attempts feebly to say album name a couple of times]…pauses, sighs… “it’s the one with the skinny ass naked dudes on the front”.  Then it goes to a screen saying “Sigur Ros: ask for it by name”.

I woke up thinking this was a genius marketing campaign and wondering who had Brad’s number. I then started thinking of all the other famous folk I knew had said they liked the band at one time or another, and how we could ad-lib these ad finitum. And since it was only for the web and could be done with no crew, maybe we could get everyone to contribute one out of the goodness of their heart, just because Sigur Ros are so fucking a-mazing.  So far, however, I’ve not got hold of Brad’s number. But, hey Brad, if you’re reading this….

Actually the reason I’ve been trying to dream up ways to get more folks to get into the band and thereby buy more records is because some very senior bright spark at a label, who shall remain nameless, pointed out very gently that we hardly do ourselves any favours by calling the record something hardly anyone can pronounce and then representing it with a pointedly “gay” cover, which is apparently repulsive to many right thinking people.  Hey, at least we called it *something* this time!  Fuck.

Kjartan told me that one of the Icelandic national papers (Morgunbladid, I think it was) prints my blog as news, and that it’s really embarrassing for him to have my ramblings spread across the land for his family to happen across. I’m not writing it with any news agenda in mind – and indeed if I was I might be a little more cautious about what I say (like not pissing off music supervisors of major TV shows by announcing that we won’t be doing their programme via the www) . But I figured that if I am going to give you an insight it might as well be a reasonably accurate one. You should hear what I don’t tell ya!

Saw the band in Detroit. Enjoyed most everything. I know the albums by heart but the live presentation was astonishing. The thing with the candle lights synced with Jonsi at the small organ left the crowd breathless. And of course the finale was mass frenzy like a berserker on the go. Congrats. I am so proud of you guys. David

Saw the Detroit show. I am a new-ish fan of Sigur Ros. I am still coming down off of the high of seeing them live. Sigur Ros makes me not want to live a boring life. Second best concert I have ever been to, next to Tom Waits in Chicago. Heysatan was brilliant. I heard Jonsi say/sing something that sounded like “scuse,” but he definitely didn’t miss any notes!

no matter what they do, SR powerfully delivers.

I was at the Toronto show. I have had the joy of seeing SR 4 times now, and three of those concert were at Toronto’s best venue hands down. Of course, I speak of Massey Hall. This venue is peerless.

That being said, the band were superb and sublime and silly and loose everything I swore they never would be when I first saw them on the AB tour. I was just telling my girlfriend on the way down to the venue that I had never seen them do an encore, and then of course they made a very thinly veiled attempt to make it look like they weren’t coming back, and once they did they saved some of the best for last. The setlist, the visuals, the confetti canons, all of it added up to the most fun SR concert I have ever seen. My personal favourite moments were ‘e-bow’ (which I had accepted never seeing live again), and Jonsi’s extended mad bow intro to Ny Batteri. The visuals on that peice, with the projections of Jonsi all huge and distorted on the screen combined with his costume had me thinking of Paganini. Great unhinged loose expressive stuff. I was happy to see the band as the four guys on stage again. Also, the band themselves seemed to be a great deal more relaxed now, which is something that was being hinted at on the Takk tour, I believe.

All in all, no one should worry, be it John Best or the fans, Sigur Ros know what they are doing, and always will. Trust them.

I saw them at NYC (2nd show) and Boston, and to be honest, I did notice the lighting was a bit subdued, but as always, I wasn’t disappointed by their performances, I enjoyed every second of them. I think Boston rocked out harder, cause New York crowds are just a little too affected (sorry, we are!). Enjoy the rest of the tour!

Thank you, the minneapolis concert was the best event i have ever been to in my life. It was my first sigur ros concert, and will not be my last. I will never forget the wonderful experience of sigur ros live.
Takk as well, for providing me with the soundtrack to a recent dream.(Straumnes).
    I dreamt:
I am in a city, and people are gathered from all over. We are charged with the energy of ourselves as a crowd, as the music of Straumnes floats through the air. We gather closer, thousands of us. We are going to change everything, starting here, now. I raise my fist, and we begin.

I just saw you guys for the second time in Minneapolis. I must say that it was hands down the most amazing concert I have been to. I thought that the set list was much better than last time (although it was cool seeing you guys in the basement of the Orpheum in Omaha). You also played my favorite song, Vidar vel til loftarasa. My only complaint was the fact that Amiina was not present. It would have been better if you played with the violins recorded in the background. Other than that is was a truly spiritual experience. Takk!!!!

First night of New York was far from a let down! I think they sounded fantastic. The music is far more important than visuals for me so I didn’t really pay attention to that. I’m glad you cleared up the Svefn-G-Englar thing because I was beginning to think I was loosing my hearing because I did _not_ think he had hit bad notes when everyone else was saying he was. I loved the little ad-lib too. It made it sound even sweeter.

I bought two tickets to the Toronto show some time ago, and waited until the last minute to invite someone. When I asked my friends, they said only I would buy tickets to see a band from Iceland who sings only in Icelandic… (unless it’s top 40 crap they aren’t interested). I was prepared to go to the show alone, and then thought to invite my dad. (he’s 65) I told him SR are a great “folk music” band from Iceland. That caught his interest, and so we went. He even dressed up in his best duds! The show was awesome. Cheers to the opening band as well. Today I bought the Heima DVD and I am on my way to watch it with your newest fan… My Dad!!

i was 3rd row at the boston show. they opened with a superb “SVEFN-G-ENGLAR” which jonsi ended by holding the last note of the song for what seemed like an ETERNITY. “SUSHLJOTT” was spectacular…jonsi’s voice was soaring to the heights that only he can reach, and the band was whirring like a cyclone beside him. i never anticipated hearing that track live…and it led into what was an unusual take on “HEYSATAN”, thanks to sound problems. the band smiled and laughed at eachother and their imperfections, which was charming to see…and then there was “VIDRAR…” i had told my wife that jonsi couldn’t remember the words after the 5th minute of the intro…i could see him laughing as kjartan was trying to refresh his memory. then jonsi started to sing, and the song took off…and it was still another breathtaking performance from an unforgettable night.
the new tracks sounded great…and bright. especially “INNI MER SYNGUR…” which had jonsi seated beside kjartan at the keyboards, their feet stomping together in perfect time as they played, with kjartan’s harmony hitting all the right spots. the first song of the encore, “illgresi”, was arrestingly beautiful and intimate. i don’t mean to waste words…so to sum it up i say “SIGUR ROS ARE MAGIC”. and i just want to thank them.

How about the show at Red Rocks! It had so many layers and emotions, just perfect with the stunning rocks, looking at the stars, and slight nip in the air. Jonsi did an incredible job that night. I want it to happen over and over again!

There was a tiny little boy with long blond hair in the row in front of me who seriously danced and flailed his arms with joy the entire show. It was a perfect symbol of the spirit and exuberance that Sigur Ros created that night. I didn’t even think he could talk but at one point he clearly said “Sigur Ros”- my girlfriend and I were amazed.

I have to say that I am one of the biggest SR fans around. I just saw them at Red Rock (Co) and as always I was blown away. I do have to ask why they have chosen to tour only as a quartet. As an die hard fan I really noticed the lack of amiina and the brass section. I understood why amiina couldn’t be there but what about the brass section? Why couldn’t they hire another 4 string quartet? I still liked the show but it was really really lacking in comparison to what it could have/should have been.

    Greek Theater Impressions:

    - Too intense to write down but I will try …
    - your rain machine guy was amazing
    - Had been looking forward to seeing you guys for two years and was more powerful than I ever imagined.
    - Can you come into my life every day and blast me with colored confetti?
    - Oh, and my life goal is to quit my job here in San Fran and buy a hybrid Volkswagen Bus (when they come out with one) and move to Europe and follow you guys around on tour … bringing with me just a snowboard and a surfboard, some finger-paints and a bicycle … I promise, I’m not a psycho stalker type … just in love with your goodness.

Berkeley show was amazing; the rain held off until the perfect moment. Thanks so much for a perfect night!

I traveled from Reno, NV to see the show in Berkeley, CA on 3 October. It exceeded my expectations. I was especially pleased to hear that Jonsi’s voice is a strong and pure (and beautiful) live as it is in recordings, and certainly has even more spiritual power in person. I have to give special kudos to the set designers and operators!!! I especially liked the mini-cam showing the hands and feet of the musicians as they created the sound. And the black and orange theme was great. I particularly liked the set with a big orange moon and flickering candle lights on the amps and monitors, as well as the fog machines. All of this enhanced the overall effect of the music, for me at least. Thanks for a beautiful experience.

    RE:Berkeley show:
So you and Mike have obviously come a long way since the NY and Boston shows. So much so that you managed perfectly orchestrated rain during the encore of the Berkeley show.
    Brilliant.
I did not think my admiration for you could get deeper, but fitting as it is-Sigur Ros never ceases to amaze me.
Cheers and Good luck for the rest of your tour.
PS- Do you guys do weddings?? ;o)

I’m a GIANT Sigur Ros fan, and that’s why I’m sorry to say I was actually a bit disappointed with last week’s show in Berkeley.

Earlier this year I had spent some of the my few remaining dollars on these tickets, and I even got my equally poor friend to drive down from Oregon for the show because I was absolutely blown away by you guys when you played with Amina in Marin two years ago.

You guys played great last week, but I’m sorry to say that it lasted only half as long as it should have. When you guys left the stage for the anchor teaser, I thought you were joking, or that maybe it was some kind of half-way intermission. After the Track 8 performance, we were screaming in the rain for you guys to “PLEASE!!” play some more…but no such luck. I really didn’t know what to think. It was just too short. Why did you guys do this? The weather? I tried to explain to my friend that you guys played longer the first time I saw you. I dunno. I was honestly left pretty disenchanted. I would have stayed in a lightning storm for you guys to keep playing…

Excellent show in motown [detroit] last month people!
my first sigur show, but absolutely NOT my last! been a HUGE progressive music fan for 40 years and so far only three bands have moved me to tears and touched my soul.
    Yes
    Flower Kings
    and YOU!
threw me for a loop because i [just realized] tend to focus on lyrics quite a bit-i dont speak the language of iceland, so only had to music to ‘go on’. BRILLIANT! there is something amazingly Deep in your music that truly reminds us ‘there is more to this world than we see with our eyes’ [a flower king lyric]
thanx for a GREAT and soothing night in Detroit and we SO appreciate you coming to motown for us!
    sincerely,
Kathi in the upper peninsula who drove 6 hours one way to hear your lovely stuff!
